Governors courted for their 2008 endorsements

Seven governors already have made endorsements early in the 2008 White House race and pressure is growing for others to choose soon, bringing along their networks of fundraisers and activists.

Their support can prove influential, some analysts say, because the most effective governors have an election-tested base of motivated voters, willing donors and the ability to help sway undecided primary voters.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has the support of three governors and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., the backing of two. Two former GOP governors -- Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Mike Huckabee of Arkansas -- each has picked up the endorsement of one governor. Clinton and Obama camps trade opening salvos

The presidential campaigns of Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) traded shots Wednesday over remarks Obama-backer and media mogul David Geffen made regarding the Clintons.

Geffen, quoted in a New York Times op-ed, took several swipes at Clinton, and her camp fired back in the direction of Obama. Geffen said Clinton would be the easiest Democrat to defeat in a general election, adding that while everyone lies in politics, the former first family does so with "such ease."

The Clinton campaign called Geffen's statements vicious and personal attacks on the New York senator and former President Bill Clinton.

"If Senator Obama is indeed sincere about his repeated claims to change the tone of our politics, he should immediately denounce these remarks, remove Mr.

A-listers turn out for Obama fundraiser

Jennifer Aniston, Eddie Murphy and Tom Hanks are among celebrities reportedly set to turn out for a glittering fundraiser for US presidential hopeful Barack Obama tonight.

The reception, packed with A-listers, movie and music moguls and other top Hollywood figures, is expected to haul in a million dollars for the Democratic senator hailed as the "rock star" candidate for 2008, according to the New York Times.

Tickets for the first major event of the campaign, organised by DreamWorks co-founders David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg, cost 2,300 dollars.

Studio bosses from Universal, Paramount, Disney and 20th Century Fox are also on the guest list.

The venue even had to be changed from a restaurant to a hotel ballroom to accommodate the bulging guest list.
